Just had a blank screen after starting an xfce session which is a bit annoying. Luckily I could still Alt-F2 to start firefox from terminal.
This handy hint by xerodeth seemed to solve it:

This has been annoying me as it did not seem to work at first.
The little “Send Image to Gimp” button just would not work.
The Options button brought up this dialogue with “gimp-remote”…..
In order for this to work I had to remove the “-remote” bit to give this:
Now the “send to gimp” button seems to work.
I’ve now been running ubuntu for about 3 weeks, but this morning when I tried to log in I got an error message:
User’s home/.dmrc file is being ignored
Luckily I found this thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=2427423&postcount=2
by a user called aidanr which told me to input the following commands which seemed to solve the problem .phew!
sudo chown -R [username] [...]
