More from the Leica M8

I’m gradually getting a bit more used to the Leica M8, this being my 6th day of owning it. Day 1 did not really count as I did not have a memory card that would work with it.

L1000155

I have noticed that it’s quite easy to accidentally jog the focus ring on the lens as I normally keep it set about 3 metres but as I have a blackrapid strap it can brush against me and get moved as there is not much damping so it needs checking before taking a shot.

L1000157

I have disabled the “auto off” feature as it does not seem to use much power when the display is off. I had it set to switch off after 10 minutes before.

L1000161

I was mainly using f/5.6 today in aperture priority – it was quite sunny so could have gone with f/8 but there are a few annoying dust spots I need to shift. Had a go with a rocket blaster and shifted a few spots but some stubborn ones left.

L1000162

Using discreet advance so shutter only resets once the button is released. The Epson RD1 has a lever to reset shutter rather than a motor so would have been nice on the M8.

L1000173

The lens hood is a bit fiddly to take on and off so I’m tending to leave it on as the lens can easily be cleaned with it in place.

Honiton Carnival 2014

Luckily the weather was quite good for the honiton carnival this year – i hear that it was pretty awful last year.  There was a handy pub called the holt which served an amazing FIVE otter ales!   we went with an otter head which was pretty good.  This is k9cc spooks

Here be dragons!

i quite like this dragon outside the brewhouse with the words “waterside house” – i remember seeing this dragon being painted in the orchard centre

DSC_2595

this dragon at the castle is very artistically designed with impressionist style spots

DSC_2596

it took me a while to find this dragon on the top floor of debenhams – i asked a couple of staff members where the dragon was and got very blank looks as if i was mad but finally someone told me it was on the top floor

Taunton Flower Show

DSC_2635
As soon as we got into the flower show it started to pour down, most people seemed to have umbrellas apart from us
DSC_2637
A lot of people headed for the various marquees for shelter which resulted in marquees so crowded there was no room to breathe let alone move so back out into the rain!
DSC_2638
There were a few loos but they were pretty cramped & smelly
DSC_2645
The rain soon stopped so we decided to head back into the marquees which were now much less crowded – this is the flower marquee and a display of cactii
DSC_2649
A lot of people seemed to be coming into this marquee all at once to see the flowers
DSC_2651
These bonsai trees were very good from the mendip bonsai studio – they were very expensive!

Sharks, Dragons, Kingston Loop

DSC_2106
A regular haunt – the royal standard at lyme
DSC_2125
Lyme has a good selection of colourful beach huts although they seem quite small
DSC_2135
this artwork in east reach is quite new – it is to promote a local tatoo parlour
DSC_2144
i assumed this lady is protesting aginst the number of roads that have been closed in central taunton with a “road closure” sign in front of her burnt to cinders – she might just be watching the busker but someone seems to have it in for road closures!
DSC_2146
An eye catching display of bags in a shop in taunton – not sure what the shop is callled but the signs say “outdoors” – not sure if they are bags though
DSC_2147
watch out for sharks in taunton library!
DSC_2158
this footbridge is part of taunton’s 21 million pound nidr scheme – it replaces the old “40 steps” bridge and has ramps that can be used by cycles and wheelchairs – the old bridge just had 40 steps at each end
DSC_2163
cycle racks for tdbc council staff at the deane house offices – they look fairly secure compared with some racks and are covered – i prefer a brompton which can just be parked under a desk but for people who use non-brompton bikes these would be handy racks

DSC_2170
i wonder how many reflections of myself i can count?

portaloo – one section of the nidr road connecting the a38 priory roundabout with the a358 near taunton school
DSC_2191
the old “kingston loop” bridge – it appears this bridge will be gone very shortly as it will be replaced with a new road bridge forming part of the NIDR road scheme
DSC_2192
nidr pipes – these pipes lie on the path of the new road adjecent to whitehall in taunton – the 2 main town churches are visible behind the pipes
DSC_2197
it looks from this sign that you cannot enter this area unless you are a shopper or have “written permission” – i wonder how you get the written permission if you are not a shopper and are therefore barred from entering.

DSC_2209
there seem to be a lot of dragons popping up in taunton recently – this has been decorated with sharpie marker pens
